Version 2.5

What's New in Scene Partner 2.5

This new version fixes a major bug caused by changes that Apple introduced in iOS 8.4 and continued in iOS 9. Please update to the new version 2.5 of Scene Partner as soon as possible.

Why did this update take so long?

The work to fix the problem that forced the Scene Partner app to close was relatively minor. This problem was caused by an update Apple made in iOS 8.4 during the July 4th weekend. This was a major iOS update which introduced their new Music service.

However, we ran into a "Perfect Storm" due to other changes that Apple also made effective on June 1. On that date, Apple began enforcing a policy that all app updates must include 64-bit support and be built to support iOS 7 and 8. The 2.4 version of Scene Partner had 32-bit support and was built to support iOS 6. As a result, many other pieces of the app had to be updated in order to release this new version and fix this bug.

We submitted a new version for Apple to review just before Labor Day. They rejected that new version because there was additional programming code that was needed to support the ability to restore prior In-App Purchases from iTunes. This required a second rewrite of a large part of the code.

While this new version 2.5 meets Apple's minimum requirements, it is still a work in progress. We have begun to transition to the iOS 7 and 8 graphic standards, but you will find some inconsistencies. These are mainly with buttons and such. We will continue to work on the graphics and hope to release a new update in the near future.

So, what is new in version 2.5?

  • THE BIG ONE: It fixes the Apple iOS 8.4 Update bug that caused Scene Partner to close when trying to enter a private library, public library or theater library in the app. This bug prevented any new scripts from being downloaded to the app. It caused the iPhone version of Scene Partner to close when tapping the "get offbook" icon and forced the iPad version to close at launch.
  • Updates the app for compatibility with iOS 7 and 8. As mentioned above, we will continue to work on the graphics and additional bug fixes. We hope to have a new update available in the near future.
  • Fixes a bug in the iPhone version that prevented some downloaded scripts from appearing on the Pick Scripts screen. If you were using Scene Partner on the iPhone you might have noticed that the Pick Script screen would only display 7 or 8 scripts. If more than 7 or 8 scripts were downloaded, you could not scroll to them all. This meant you had to delete some scripts from the device in order to access others. This is a bug that cropped up during the release of iOS 8.1 and was high on our list to fix. All scripts will now appear on the iPhone.
  • Fixes a bug in the "note" feature that created problems with other recorded content. If you recorded a note using the "note" feature, then all voice recordings in all scripts would be disabled and not play. This included both note recordings and line recordings. This also appeared after the release of iOS 8.1. Note recordings no longer create problems for other recorded playback.
  • Includes updated and improved text-to-speech voices from Acapela - an added benefit, but one that took a bit of extra time. The prior versions of the Acapela voices did not include 64-bit support so we had to update the voices in order to meet Apple's requirements. But the voices sound great!

Plus, we have been making a lot of additions to the voice pronunciation dictionaries so that they work better with the MTI musicals that we now offer on the WebStore (believe it or not, "DOO-WOP-SHOO-BOP" is not actually a word). These dictionaries are now included with the new voices. There are over 500 dictionary entries for Shakepearean words, lots of common words that were mis-pronounced and 1500 words for the musicals! The new voices are SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!!

Are there any bugs that might still be a problem in version 2.5?

  • The new Acapela text-to-speech voices will be downloaded to your device when you update to version 2.5. However, there are three voices that need to be manually restored from within the app. The Brad, Steve and Michelle voices, all available as InApp Purchases, are completely new voice files. If you have previously purchased them, please go to the Account Settings > Available Voices screen after your voices update and tap the Restore button. The new voice files will download for free.
  • On some newer iOS devices, the processing icon never disappears after some scripts are downloaded to your device. This doesn't affect the download itself, so as soon as you see the "Success" message, just tap the "get offbook" icon to view the downloaded script.
  • On the iPhone version, the Delete button does not appear after swiping right to left on the Pick Scripts screen. However, the delete button functionality is there. Just tap the right corner of the script cell and you will be prompted to confirm the script deletion.
  • Though not technically a bug, there is still some graphic work that needs to be done. As we mentioned above, we have begun to transition to the iOS 7 and 8 graphic standards, but you will find some inconsistencies. These are mainly with buttons and such. We will continue to update the graphics and hope to release a new update in the near future.

Version 2.4

What's New in Scene Partner 2.4

This new version fixes several bugs (listed below) caused by changes that Apple introduced in iOS 7. Please update to the new version of Scene Partner at your earliest convenience.

  • Fixes a bug where the iOS keyboard would not pop up if you tried to get into a Theater Library. Because Apple did not provide the keyboard you could not enter a Theater Library Key and access the scripts for your theater.

Unfortunately this bug delayed our launch of Music Theatre International and Theatrical Rights Worldwide e-Scripts on the Scene Partner WebStore this Fall. With this completed, we hope to have the first of these titles available for you before the end of the year.

  • Fixes a bug where Act and Scene Listings in some Publisher e-Scripts were not appearing correctly.

  • Fixes a bug where Progress Bars for Voice and Feature Downloads could no longer be seen in certain cases. This prevented you from tracking how far along those downloads were.

Version 2.3 - iOS 7 Update

Known Issues With Scene Partner 2.3 and iOS 7

The good news is that Apple did not break the App this time! For those who remember our iOS 6 adventures when Apple changed how they handle videos, Apple has been a little kinder to us this time around. After extensive testing with iOS 7 we have come up with a relatively small list of bugs that we will be working on in the next few weeks. They include:

  • Theater Libraries - Under iOS 7 you will not be able to enter a Theater's Script Library from within the App. Apple has changed the way they manage the pop ups that ask you to enter text. You will still see the pop up that asks you to enter your Theater's Library Key password, but the new iOS 7 doesn't provide a keyboard so that you can enter it. This issue does not impact your Personal Libraries.

This is the biggest issue we are facing with the new iOS. In fact, because Theaters will want to rent multiple copies of Music Theatre International's Musicals for their cast members, this issue has forced us to delay the launch of the first wave of MTI Musical Rental titles. Until this is fixed, Theaters will not have an easy way to distribute MTI Rental titles to their actors.

We will be working diligently to get this fixed. In the meantime, if you do choose to upgrade to iOS 7 (or one of your cast members does) we can work with you to distribute e-Scripts "manually" - that is, from "behind the curtain." Just email us at info(at)scenepartnerapp.com.
  • Act and Scene Listings in Publisher e-Scripts - Under iOS 7 there are some Publisher e-Scripts that no longer display the Scenes and Scene Numbers in the "Tracklist" feature of Scene Partner. This issue only impacts a small number of e-Scripts. This is on our list to fix with the next release.

  • Progress Bars for Voice and Feature Downloads - Under iOS 7 you can no longer see the progress bar to track how far along downloads are. This is also on our list.

Not terrible, but certainly not what we would like. We will send out emails and post notices when a new version of Scene Partner is ready for you to download. Thanks for your patience!

Version 2.3 - Original Release

What's New in Scene Partner 2.3

Scene Partner 2.3 gets you ready for Samuel French... and beyond!

New e–Scripts titles from Samuel French will be available soon and you will need the latest version of Scene Partner to use them in the App. Plus, we've optimized Scene Partner for some other surprises that we have coming! Watch your emails, push notifications, facebook and twitter for big announcements coming soon!

New voices available for only $1.99 each!

There are now 16 NEW Acapela voices available for purchase. We have added 3 new U.S. English voices, including “Micah” a male voice with a Southern twang. There are 3 new English voices with an accent, a U.K. female voice, an Australian male voice and female voice from India. In addition, Scene Partner 2.3 introduces the first non-English voices, including new French, German, Italian, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese speakers. The additional voices are available via In App Purchase for just $1.99 each.

New plumbing!

There are a number of core systems in the app that have been updated to their latest versions so that we can continue to bring you the most stable App possible, as well as provide a solid platform for future versions. Hopefully these will result in a better overall experience with Scene Partner. We also tweaked some graphics and added support for the iPad retina display in the iPad 3.

BUG FIXES!

Listen screen bugs related to iOS 6

The new version of Apple's operating system continues to make things interesting! We fixed a series of iOS 6 bugs that created problems on the Listen screen. In version 2.2, if you're listening to your script and the device goes to sleep, or you multi-task to an App that uses audio or you get a phone call, then odd things could happen. Usually this required a restart of the App in order to get the Listen screen to play audio correctly. This has been fixed.

Navigation by Tracklist

Again, a feature that was working fine until iOS6, is now working fine again. In version 2.2 you were unable to use the tracklists to move around the script. This has been fixed. In version 2.3 you can use them again to move from line to line, cue to cue or scene to scene.

Erratic e-Script errors in the Read > Highlight screen

A bug in the App was causing errors in certain Sections of the Read>Highlight feature when using a Publisher e-Script. The error would cause the App to close. This has been fixed.

Edit screen bug

A bug that appeared after iOS6 caused the Edit screen to go blank if you tried to edit the script in Landscape mode. This occurred when using an iPad2, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S running iOS 6. This has been fixed.

Various minor bug fixes related to iOS 6

Known Issues

Painfully slow voice downloads with the iPhone 5 on some wifi networks

If you are finding that voice downloads are taking an incredibly long time using your new iPhone 5, well, we're still trying to figure that one out. Here's what we know, it has something to do with the iPhone 5 itself (this is not happening with other iOS devices), the specific wifi configuration that the iPhone 5 is using (this is not happening on most wifi networks) and our specific server configuration (this is not happening when accessing most servers). Unfortunately, we have not been able to identify which specific configurations are causing the problems.

The current workaround for this problem is either to switch to cellular data by toggling off the wifi connection on your iPhone 5 or to connect through a different wifi network.

Please be aware that our voice file sizes typically run approximately 60MB, so the cellular option may potentially impact your data plan.

This has been a very puzzling problem. We know that the iPhone 5 has some well documented wifi issues, but we don't think they are root of the problem. We will send out an update when we have more information.

Screen flicker with iOS 6.1

After submitting Scene Partner 2.3 to Apple for their review, Apple released iOS 6.1. Suprise! More undocumented changes to the operating system! During our testing we have noticed that we occasionally get a screen flicker in the App. While it is annoying, it does not cause and performance issues and it eventually goes away. We have it on our bug fix list for version 2.4.

Scripts can't be found in the “my library” screen

This one is our bug, not Apple's. We have discovered that part of the issue with this nagging problem is that the screens on the “add scripts” screen do not automatically reset to the first script in the list when you enter that library. So, if you have scrolled the list of titles on the “public library” screen to script number 10 and then tap “my library”, the screen remains in the same relative position in the “my library” screen, at script number 10. The result is that the first script in the “my library” screen is hidden. To fix this, just scroll back up to the top of the screen and you should see your script. If this doesn't work, please follow the instructions provided here. We have this on our bug fix list for version 2.4 as well.

Version 2.2

What's New in Scene Partner 2.2

  • Fixes a bug where script tracklist data would be loaded incorrectly in the app.

  • On the iPad, if you selected the line/cue/scene tracklist (popover) button and then tapped the button again, and then you tapped outside of the tracklist as described above, then the tracklist turned a dark blue/black – this has been fixed
  • On the iPad, if you selected the account settings button and then tapped the button again, and then you tapped outside of the menu listing, then the menu listing turned a dark blue/black – this has been fixed
  • The Record and Note features only worked in Full Scene mode if you had selected a Character in the Cast screen, otherwise Scene Partner would close – this has been fixed
  • On the iPhone, if you selected certain screens in a specific sequence, your My Library tab in the Add Scripts screen might appear to be empty – this has been fixed

*Due to copyright restrictions, some Edit features are not available for use with Publisher e-Scripts

Known issues in Scene Partner 2.1:

** ALERT! Scene Partner is not yet compatible with iOS 6 **

Based on our preliminary testing, Scene Partner is not yet compatible with iOS 6, which launches on September 19th from Apple. Scene Partner requires iOS versions 4.0 - 5.1.1. We are working on an update to address this and will let you know via the website, email and push notification as soon as it is ready.

Script is not appearing in the "My Library" screen

We occasionally hear from customers who have uploaded a script or purchased an e-Script from the WebStore, but then cannot see the script in the "My Library" tab on their devices. We have been unable to reproduce this so far, but we do have a quick fix for it. We recommend following these steps in the order below:

  • Please make sure your account is active
If your Scene Partner account has not been verified, then your account is not yet active. If your account is not active, then you will not see scripts in the "My Library" tab.

To help reduce internet fraud and spam, we ask that you activate your Scene Partner account. In order to do this we send you a verification email to make sure that you entered your email address correctly and to confirm that your email address is not being used without your knowledge. If you have not received a verification email from us then your email address may have been entered incorrectly. It is also possible that the email from us went to your junk or spam folder.

If you try to sign in here on the website and get an error message, please send an email to "info(at)scenepartnerapp.com" with your username and the email address that you used when signing up. We will check your account status and help you verify and activate your existing account.
  • Sign out of Scene Partner and then sign back in
Go to the Scene Partner Home screen. Tap the "account settings" icon located on the second row of the iPhone or in the bottom left corner of the iPad. Tap "Update Account" and then tap "Sign Out". When the "Sign In" button appears, tap it to sign back in to Scene Partner.

Return to the Home screen and tap "add scripts". The script should now appear in the "My Library" tab.
  • Close Scene Partner completely and then relaunch the App
Close down Scene Partner completely, don't just multi-task out of the App. Here is how to do that.

While Scene Partner is the active app and showing on the screen, press the round Home screen button on the iPhone, iPod or iPad once. This should display the device's home screen. Then double click the round button. This will reveal a row of App icons at the bottom of the device screen. Scene Partner should be the first one on the left.

Press the Scene Partner logo until all of the icons start to wiggle and show a minus sign in the upper left hand corner of the icon. Tap the minus sign on the Scene Partner icon and Scene Partner will close. Then tap the device's home screen to dismiss the row of icons.

Reopen Scene Partner by tapping the icon on the device's screen. On the Scene Partner Home screen, tap "add scripts". The script should now appear in the "My Library" tab.
  • Reboot the device completely and then relaunch the App
In unusual cases it may be necessary to completely reboot the device. Here is how to do that.

Hold down the Power button on the top of the device. The device screen will fade and a red arrow will appear with the message "slide to power off." Slide the power control to the right and turn the device off.

Wait for a few seconds and press the Power button on the top of the device again to restart it. Reopen Scene Partner by tapping the icon on the device's screen. On the Scene Partner Home screen, tap "add scripts". The script should now appear in the "My Library" tab.

Playback stops working in the "listen" screen

We have received a couple of reports from customers who have experienced audio problems during playback. This typically occurs on the "listen" > "Full Scene" or on the "listen" > "My Scenes" screens. The playback will only play the first line and not progress to the second one automatically. This occurs with both the text-to-speech voices and recorded lines. After troubleshooting these issues, we believe it is either related to conflicts with another audio app or with Apple's AirPlay technology. We addressed the AirPlay issues in a prior release, and thought we got it again this time, but it is an elusive problem. However, the fix is a simple one.

Return to the "listen" screen. "listen" > "Full Scene" and "listen" > "My Scenes" modes should play normally.

Voices don't play after they are downloaded

We have received a couple of reports from customers who have experienced audio problems after downloading a voice or voices to the App. This typically occurs immediately after downloading the two free voices or after downloading a new purchased voice. When the play button is tapped in the "listen" screen no audio plays. We believe this is due to network connectivity issues, however, the fix is quick and easy.

Return to the "listen" screen. The downloaded voices should play normally.

Voice downloads gets hung and won't complete

We have received a couple of reports from customers who have experienced audio problems while downloading a voice or voices to the App. This typically occurs during a voice download to the app. While the voice is in the downloading state the download processing bar will freeze up. While voice downloads can take several minutes due to the size of the files, in these cases the download stops part way through. We believe this is due to network connectivity issues, however, this can be fixed by following the steps below.

  • Reboot the device completely and then relaunch the App
Rebooting the device will resolve a frozen download.

On the Scene Partner Home screen, tap "account settings" > "Available Voices".

If the error occurred during the first voice download of the free voices, then a prompt should appear to download them again. If the error occurred during the purchase of a voice, you can select the voice again for purchase. Apple will only charge your iTunes account once for each voice.

Version 2.0

Major Scene Partner Update!

Scene Partner 2.0 sets the stage for an important new Scene Partner innovation, publisher
e–Scripts on the Scene Partner webstore. e–Scripts are coming soon for Scene Partner and this version gets you ready for them! When e–Scripts are available they will only work in Scene Partner 2.0 and future releases.

New Scene Partner 2.0 combines the previous Lite and Paid versions of Scene Partner into one App for greater convenience. Scene Partner is now a FREE App with all of the Features of the former Scene Partner Lite, plus the ability to add Premium Paid Features of the former Full Version individually or in a convenient Feature Pack.

And because it’s now one App, any Voices that you purchase or Scripts that you download in Scene Partner 2.0 will be available for use when you are ready to add Paid Features.

But don’t worry, if you have the Paid version and update to 2.0, the Paid Features are automatically included.

The App size has been dramatically reduced so that Scene Partner is easier to download and update in the future. How did we do that? We took the two free voices out of the App download! But don’t worry, we will automatically prompt you to download the two free voices from within the App once you install it. Please be aware that each voice requires approximately 60MB of available space and may take a few minutes to download depending on your internet connection.

We’ve added Push Messages to let you know when e–Scripts from theatrical publishers will be ready (coming soon!). We’ll use push to let you know when important new titles are available! Be sure to accept Push Messages when prompted so that you can stay
up–to–date. We won’t spam you, we promise!

Added the ability to hide your lines in the Read screen using the new Black highlight color, toggle it on and off to hide and reveal your lines.

Various bug fixes related to iOS 5, including playback conflicts with Apple’s AirPlay and keyboard problems on the Edit screen.

Various bug fixes to improve script conversions on the Scene Partner website.

Various bug fixes for the iPhone version in landscape mode.

Known issues in Scene Partner 2.0:

On the iPad, using iOS 5.0 and above, the line/cue/scene tracklists (popovers) in the get offbook screens fill almost the entire screen. This makes closing the tracklist, by tapping outside of it, very tricky. However, a small sliver of the screen should still be visible on the left, right and bottom of the tracklist. Tap there and the tracklist will close.

On the iPad, if you select the line/cue/scene tracklist (popover) button and then tap the button again, and then you tap outside of the tracklist as described above, then the tracklist turns a dark blue/black. However, just tap outside of the tracklist again and it will close to display the full screen.

On the iPad, if you select the account settings button and then tap the button again, and then you tap outside of the menu listing, then the menu listing turns a dark blue/black. However, just tap outside of the listing again and it will close.

The Record and Note features only work in Full Scene mode if you have selected a Character in the Cast screen. Otherwise Scene Partner will close.

On the iPhone, if you select certain screens in a specific sequence, your My Library tab in the Add Scripts screen may appear to be empty, even if you have uploaded scripts. Don’t worry, just tap the Public Library tab and then tap the My Library tab. You’re My Library tab will now refresh and you will see your scripts.

Version 1.1

Enhanced script recognition. Scripts that do not meet the standard playwriting conventions used by Scene Partner no longer cause crashes when downloaded to the App. However, these scripts will not be optimized for use with Scene Partner. See standard playwriting conventions for a discussion of how to optimize your script for use with Scene Partner.

Improved the script analysis and conversion logic for Character Names, Acts and Scenes in scripts.

Added title, author, genre and type search functionality in the Public and Private Library tabs.

Increased the size of the Recording controls for the Record and Notes screens for better usability.

Read/Highlight screen functionality in the Full Version has been modified to accept larger scripts. Scripts that exceeded a certain size could cause a crash in the Highlight screen.
